What is the reason your university cited for their position that you might be violating J status?
It is not the official position of my university. It is the opinion of the lady at the international office I spoke to, and actually all she did was warn me that flight training is kind of a delicate issue here in the US (and I can honestly see why) and that I should look into the matter carefully before proceeding.
Can the training you are seeking be construed as a professional training (even if you may choose to use it as a hobby)? I sort of recall that flight instruction schools could issue I-20, which would imply that those courses are considered professional courses. If that is the case, then you might indeed be violating your J status.
You're right, flight schools run all sorts of courses and from my research I know that they can issue the documentation required for M-1 visa (it used to be J-1s as well but that stopped in June 2009, if I remember correctly). I am just interested in sport flight training, which means that (even) if I get a flight license I won't be able to fly for compensation of any sort and I won't be able to perform any sort of aerial work. My flight experience could be regarded as professional training just like driving a car can be regarded useful for learning to drive a truck, though. In my opinion it is a bit far-fetched to affirm that this makes it 'professional training', otherwise most forms of training (even playing baseball with friends on Sunday afternoons) would count as professional. I hope this point makes sense :-)
On the other hand, if you can show that the course you will that cannot be used as a professional course, e.g., that course cannot fulfill credit requirements towards becoming an instructor, or a pilot who can fly cargo and/or passengers, then you should be alright.
Becoming an instructor, flying cargo and passengers for compensation all require more advanced licenses that all come with their courses and additional requirements (the "importance" sequence is -- more or less -- sport pilot -> private pilot -> commercial pilot -> airline transportation pilot). AFAIK flight hours logged as a sports pilot (not during training) can be made to count towards fulfilling the requirements for becoming a private pilot (and he cannot use his license to work as well, btw) but I'm not even trying to do that (and I can show it: if I wanted I'd have required a different kind of TSA clearance and medical certificate, I believe).
In any case thank you very, very much for your opinion. It's quite probably the first substantiated one I get for my case. This forum and its users rock.

Hi, I am in exactly the same situation. Would just the I-140 receipt number suffice? My employer also hasn't given me any copies of the I-140 and labor certification copies. My I-140 is approved and it's been more than 180 days since I-485 filing..please advise.

AS A SIDENOTE - IN ALL LIKELIHOOD YOUR LAWYERS WOULD HAVE INFORMED YOUR EMPLOYER THAT YOU WERE ASKING FOR I-140 RECEIPT, THEREBY SENDING A SIGNAL TO YOUR EMPLOYER THAT YOU MAY BE JUMPING THE SHIP SOON!

all the best with your wife's SSN application. My wife got her EAD 2 months ago and next day only we applied for SSN. Still waiting to get one. We called them after 4 weeks of application and they say they are waiting from USCIS to respond with the legal status (confirming EAD) to issue this number. So after 2 months still status is same.
I asked them if there is anything we could do, answer is none.
Can i speak with your supervisor to get more info, answer is same.
According to the EAD, she can work. She has TIN number, but I am not sure if she can use that...

Take duplicate copies of the form. Take your and spouse passports with one copy each. Both you and your spouse needs to sign the form. CGI Houston does not takes the Check so carry the cash.

With the revision of the bulletin being revoked, things kind of worked out ok. However why has'nt anyone looked into what exactly happened on July 2nd and who was responsible for what? All the questions that Zoe Lofgren asked were very legitimate. Why were they not answered? We had Condi Rice say that all visa's were exhausted; this was on TV. Was she lying or mis-informed by someone in her department? Who misinformed her? What was the motivation for revising the bulletin? Who ordered the mass-processing of pending applicatons that we have now seen? Why were all dates made current in the first place? Which agency did it and who did they not talk to?
If it were not for the flower-campaign induced media exposure, and the tough stance taken by Zoe Lofgren, USCIS/DOS could have gotten away doing whatever they wanted. What if the next time something like this happens Zoe is not working on the immigration subcommittee in the House? No one else stood up against this mangling of the law. If you steal a car and two weeks later go put it back where you took it from, it does not change the fact that you stole the car and must be held responsible for it. Where is the responsibility for what happened on July 2nd?
Anyone contacted the Ombudsman to see if he is doing a special report on this July 2nd fiasco?

If the law is changed. All dates will be current. if it's not changed your date from 2005 means squat. There are abt 200K ppl in the line ahead of you.. no way you are getting anything this life.. maybe you can leave your PD in inheritance to your kid born in India :)

I did my three years diploma (polytechnic) and three years engineering degree (B.E.) after that and I had @ eight years of experience while I had applied for GC through EB2 category. I had no problem in getting my I-140 approval; so far I have not received single rfe.

Kaisersose thank you for your reply. Is their a time limit for how long I have to work for the GC filling employer? what worries me is if they fire me in lets say 1 month after hire during their probation period am I safe? Even though i was working part time some where else.
As you have a GC, you can work for any employer in the range {A, B, C...Z}, work for 2 or more of them simultaneously and handle any kind of job. There is no law that will create a problem out of this during naturalization.
Of course, one can do this with a 485 EAD too, but there is the one restriction of "same or similar".

I filed for labor cert in april 28, 2004 and I now have all approved including I-140. My I-485 receipt date is July 3, 2007 in Nebraska. Does teh July 19 date USCIS is showing mean I will get my green card soon. What should I expect moving forward and what type of timeline?

Finally my EB-2 Sch-A Cat.II I-140 got approved on Oct-30. I got five emails today.
I submitted my I-140 as regular and then upgraded to Premium a week before on Oct-25.
thanks to all of you on this important forums who helped me lot in the process.
Now I will be enjoying ride of Retrogession Starting from Nov-1 in Sch-A cases.
Will Keep posted about I-485 as it develops.
Good luck to all.

It is absolutely fine to write to editors etc. but if you are planning a sustained campaign, it is best to coordinate with the media team lead by Sunil. It is always good to convey the same message from all our outlets.
Also, I urge everyone writing and calling media to keep it civil, DO NOT DENIGRATE other groups, just focus on our issues, and stay polite.

Attorney forgot to mention "NONE" in Part3 - Sction C of my 485 application.
Wow... really ? Thats a pretty stupid reason for USCIS to issue an RFE :confused:

It is minimum 60 days I guess. My PWD request was lodged 1st week of Jan and still waiting.
